It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that the West African Internet Governance Forum (WAIGF) remembers Muriel Alapini, a cherished colleague, mentor, and visionary leader in the Internet governance ecosystem in West Africa and beyond.
Muriel was a passionate and dedicated advocate for an inclusive, accessible, and community-driven Internet. A Beninese communications specialist and Internet governance expert, she devoted many years to promoting digital inclusion and capacity-building across the region. Her work spanned advocacy, training, community engagement, and youth empowerment in digital policy.
As Vice President of the FGI Benin Association, an ICANN Fellow, and an active participant in Internet governance initiatives, Muriel played pivotal roles in shaping discussions and actions that strengthened the participation of end-users, especially women and young people, in digital policy dialogues. Her contributions included organizing and coordinating sessions at national and regional forums, including the West Africa Internet Governance Forum and the West Africa School on Internet Governance (WASIG).
Her commitment extended to capacity-building and community outreach through trainings, awareness campaigns, and collaborative workshops that empowered individuals to engage meaningfully with issues such as digital rights, online behavior, and policy processes.
Muriel’s legacy is one of service, mentorship, and tireless advocacy. She leaves behind an indelible mark on the IG ecosystem — not only in West Africa but across the global Internet governance community. Her voice, guidance, and compassionate leadership will be dearly missed.
