WASIG 2025 OVERVIEW
Abuja, Nigeria
The WASIG’s main objective is to build the capacity of West African stakeholders on Internet Governance issues in general, and particularly on prevailing and emerging issues specific to the region. The capacity-building and awareness-raising exercises on Internet Governance will ensure that the participants are well-prepared to contribute at the national, regional, continental, and global levels of the IG process.
2025 is a crucial year for the race for regulation and the governance of technologies based on Artificial Intelligence. In this context, this year’s WASIG will therefore be a special “Alumni” edition that will produce a final document based on the work that began last year during the school. This year with the support of ECOWAS professionals, participants will improve the draft document

CONTEXT
Initiated as the outcome of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and guided by the Tunis Agenda, the West Africa Internet Governance Forum (WAIGF) is committed to advancing Internet governance across the West African region. This initiative operates under the endorsement of the United Nations and is supported by the ECOWAS Commission. WAIGF serves as a regional dialogue facilitating multi-stakeholder discussions on public policy issues related to the key elements of Internet governance. The forum’s secretariat, based within the ECOWAS Commission, operates in unison with the IGF Multi-stakeholder Advisory Group (IGF-MAG), ensuring that representatives from member states and stakeholders across West Africa are actively engaged in shaping the digital landscape.
OBJECTIVE
The aim of the WAIGF is to foster an environment conducive to building the capacity of West African stakeholders in Internet governance, preparing them for meaningful participation in both regional and international arenas. By maintaining a consistent approach to addressing Internet governance issues, the forum seeks to streamline processes and encourage inclusive participation across the diverse array of stakeholders within the region.
Moreover, the WAIGF is committed to formulating recommendations and policies that reflect the perspectives and priorities of individuals and organizations across West Africa concerning the Internet. Through inclusive dialogue and collaboration, WAIGF aims to develop actionable recommendations and policy frameworks that address the evolving needs and challenges of the digital landscape in the region.
